Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services and processes

Just how deep do I need to dig for my foundations?

Okay, so the foundation depth isn't just a random guess; it really depends on a few important things. The type of soil is a big factor. If it's solid clay, you might not need to dig as deep as if it's loose sand. Also, what are you building? A small shed doesn't need the same massive foundation as a two-story house. Local building regulations are key, and these often specify minimum depths to prevent movement from frost or soil changes. It's always worth checking with your local Canterbury building control, or a structural engineer.

What's the best way to mark out where I need to dig?

Getting your trenches marked out properly will really save you a headache later! First off, check your building plans and use them to measure out the exact dimensions of your foundations. Use wooden pegs hammered into the ground to mark the corners, then run string lines between the pegs to outline the trenches. A builder's square is really helpful for making sure everything is at right angles. Double check all your measurements before you even think about digging.

Is it okay to dig the trenches myself, or should I get a professional in?

Whether you dig the trenches yourself depends on how confident you are, and what the project is. Digging isn’t that hard, but getting it right is. For small, simple jobs like a garden wall foundation, you might be okay doing it yourself if you're fairly fit and have a good understanding of what's needed. But for anything bigger, especially a house extension or new build, it's much better to get a professional groundwork contractor. They've got the experience, the right equipment (like mini diggers to remove soil) , and they'll make sure the trenches are dug to the correct depth and width, and that the base is level and compacted. Mistakes at this stage can be a nightmare to fix later.

How level does the bottom of the trench need to be?

Really level. Like, seriously level! The bottom of your trenches needs to be as close to perfectly level as possible. Any significant dips or humps will create weak points in your foundations. Use a long spirit level and a straight edge (a long piece of timber works well) to check the base of the trench as you go. If you find any high spots, dig them out; if there are low spots, fill them with compacted hardcore. Getting this right is crucial for a strong and stable foundation.

What happens if it rains after I've dug the trenches?

Rain after you've dug your trenches isn’t the end of the world, but you do need to deal with it. If it's just a light shower, it probably won't do too much harm. But if it's a heavy downpour, the trenches could fill with water and the sides could start to collapse. The main thing is to get the water out as soon as possible, ideally with a pump. Once the water's gone, check the sides and bottom of the trench for any erosion or loose soil. If necessary, re-compact the base and tidy up the sides before you pour the concrete. If you see a lot of collapse, it's a good idea to get a professional opinion before proceeding.
